  • WOT beat UVA 65 - 48

I was not able to watch the game but it appears that SC played with Pili, who looked a little gimpy in the second half against Hawaii.

The women outscored Virginia in all 4 quarters in this low-scoring affair. The shooting was poor for both teams with SC hitting 23-65 shots (35.4%), 4-14 3FGs (26.7%) and 60% FTs (15-25). The Cavaliers shot a paltry 28.6% (18-63), 15.4% 3FGs (2-13) and 55.6% FTs (10-18). It must have been an ugly game to watch.

SC outrebounded UVA 52-45, including 17 ORBs - 15 ORBs, so both teams getting a lot of second chance opportunities. SC turned the ball over 12 times to 15 for the Cavs (all but 3 coming from the 12 Trojan steals - 6 for Jordan Sanders, 4 for Tera Reed and 2 for Rayah Marshall). UVA managed only 4 steals.

SC scored 30 pts in the paint, had 26 bench pts, 17 pts off of TOs, 12 fastbreak pts and 10 second chance points.
UVA scored 20 pts in the paint, had 23 bench pts, 7 pts off of TOs, 4 fastbreak pts and 5 second chance points.

SC led 34-30 at the half and in the second half outscored UVA 31-18 to seal the 65-48 win.

The starting lineup for this game: Tera Reed, Jordan Sanders, Desi Caldwell, Angel Jackson and Jordyn Jenkins.

Individually, Rayah Marshall was the leading scorer off the bench with 16 pts (and 9 rebs, 2 steals), followed by Jordan Sanders and Tera Reed with 13 apiece and Clarice Akunwafo stepping up for a double double with 10 pts and 10 rebounds. Jenkins shot poorly, going 1-6 FGs and 1-4 FTs for 3 pts. Not a good performance for a starter. Desi played 33 minutes and had 10 rebounds and 4 assists (only 1 TO), but made only 2 of 10 shots and 1-2 FTs for a total of 5 pts. Her scoring is still deficient but she appeared to positively impact in other areas. Bella Perkins received only 10 minutes of PT, missed her 2 shots (3 ptrs), had 2 rebs and 1 assist. Kyra White (7), Amaya Oliver (2) and Madison Campbell (2) had little PT and were scoreless.

WOT now 2-0 on the season with the next game at Galen against Western Michigan on Thursday Nov. 18th. Not sure if they will reschedule the start time for the game on Saturday Nov. 20th at 2 pm against Missouri State, as it currently conflicts with the SC vs. UCLA football game in the Coliseum, which kicks-off at 1 pm. It is hard to gage how Western Michigan is this season, they steamrolled Kentucky State in their only game so far and play Purdue next, however, Missouri State is a strong women's basketball program having won 29 conference championships, made 15 NCAA tournament appearances, gone to 2 Final Fours (1992, 2001) and winning the WNIT in 2005. They have already beaten Little Rock and North TX and have Oklahoma State next before playing the WOT.

Here are the game highlights. In these you will see how good Rayah Marshall is and imagine what her future will be. This includes a dunk attempt, she's got game!

WOT only got two votes this week in the AP poll. Missouri State however got 14 votes so if we beat them, then we might get more recognition than we have, especially with some voters outside of the West.

if the football game is not competitive, then I’m going to walk over to Galen.
