  • Who scheduled this game?

Genuine question. 3 games in 5 days right after a tough road sweep is not the smartest move in my opinion. Squeaking out wins against inferior teams and not covering the spread would also potentially hurt our KenPom/NET rankings. Why take the risk?

Should they not have played Santa Clara and UCI which helped the KenPom significantly?

If it came against a mentally and physically draining road trip 3 days previously, absolutely not.

They had two days off and aren’t playing well, it happens

They shouldn't be in this position in the first place.

Personally, I’m fine with this. Who the heck knows how the rest of our schedule will play out with Stanford and OSU possibly being made up, the pac-12 tournament being non stop if we make it to the finals, and the NCAA tournament probably in a modified schedule as well in their Indy bubble. Good prep for the challenges ahead.

Exactly this. You can’t just not play games. Look at Duke, Coach K cancelled games and they have no quality wins and might not make the tourney

LOL. Duke could go 7-8. Not play half their games, not finish over .500 and still be a 6 seed.

Serious question: in terms of rankings/seeding, is it better to have an extra W (albeit close), or have one fewer game?

Our NET just took a hit so that should answer your question

Terrible decision to schedule this game. Thought that before the game and still think that even after a win. Absolutely nothing to gain and everything to lose. I understand if AE was trying to get Waters & Morgan some run but if your going to do that make sure it's an absolute cream puff. You come off two big road wins, still have two make-up games in conference (one which Norlander said is scheduled next Tuesday), and haven't had much practice time because of Covid. That's now 3 halves and 4 minutes (ASU end of 1st half) of terrible basketball. Not only that our Kenpom & Net Rankings took a hit.

How do our rankings go down after a win? Margin of victory?

Somewhat. But more because our efficiency numbers took a big hit.

Kenpom is great indicator of how good a team is. It uses offense & defensive efficiency numbers among other things. For example our Kenpom numbers in the 4 years of AE winning teams has been right around 50. So not great considering the talent but this year it was 16. Going into tonight we're 39th(offense) & 11th(defense). After tonight numbers went up to 43rd & 13th. So as Sketch has pointed out we should be better offensively.

I agree with the point that playing games are important. But similarly, losing bad games (like tonight) will prohibit you from playing the tournament. Look at UCLA last year - they dominated in P12 play but their horrible non conference losses projected them as a fringe team. Risk to reward just doesn't add up here.

I hear you, It’s a risk, but you have the upside of a KenPom climb if you smoke them (see UCI). I do think the problem with today was more execution than scheduling
