  • Coaching vs Ranked Opponents

The following is just a list, but was curious about USC's record vs ranked teams. I cannot vouch for the source as rankings fluctuate during the season, but that is what the record shows.
    2013 0-2
    2014 0-3
    2015 2-4
    2016 1-7
    2017 0-3
    2018 0-1
    2019 0-4
2020 0 The loss against UConn may count as I believe they are ranked now?

Total including UConn 3-25........ regardless of the talent, that is not a very good performance over 8 seasons. Every team upsets somebody once in awhile.
Second USC also has a lot of losses in the Pac-12 which has not had many ranked teams over this period, like this year with 1 ranked team.

This is a year with the USC talent level and the low level of the PAC-12, this would be a year for a high finish. We'll see. USC has not played most of the top half of the teams in the standings: UCLA 2, Oregon 1, Stanford 2 , Colorado 1 and Utah 1 on the road

How many sweet 16s does Mick Cronin, coach of the LA blueblood have over that time span? I’ll wait

What is your point other than asking about Cronin? What the question have to do with the post above? Irrelevant question

Since you asked. He has always made the NCAA in that span. (Sweet 16 in 2011) 4 rounds of 64 3 rounds of 32. record over that span above: 201-61. 76.72% win percentage

2020 isn't a very fair analysis since there's only one ranked team in the Pac and we haven't played them.
0-4 in 2019, does that mean there was only 2 rank teams in the entire PAC 12? We had a solid year in 2019. What are other USC basketball coach's records against ranked team? I would bet not good. Even home games against ranked teams are a struggle for us since only a thousand people show up and its not just an Enfield thing.

There seems to be bias in using the rankings. Would probably make more sense to use something more results driven like NET.

Found an interesting blog comparing NCAA tourney coaches and Enfield is actually 7-0 against the spread in the tourney according to that site which is something that goes against his chronic underachiever label. At least he's fooling Vegas.

Personally, I think these Enfield sucks at coaching threads always miss important context. Who are you comparing Enfield to and would that coach ever consider trying to revitalize a under-resourced and under-appreciated program like USC basketball. I don't think anyone here would argue a coach like Mark Few wouldn't be able to put USC on a better trajectory than they currently are, but Few seems pretty happy being in Spokane where Gonzaga basketball is life. USC just isn't a dream job in basketball and if there was a stud coach that came here, they'd probably leave for greener pastures with a more supportive fan base.

Yes, I still feel that CAE can grow and improve. His family is likely happy here and he is growing his relationships with local high schools more and more every year.

I actually took the time to go back and look at those losses. I don't think we were the higher ranked team in any of them. I don't know if that means anything other than we didn't do better than expected. Like sketch says, we'll see in the coming weeks vs Oregon & UCLA if we can beat the higher ranked teams this year.

Mick is the third highest paid coach in the sport and coaches the blueblood in LA. He’s 0-2 against Enfield, who coaches a team with no tradition and no FA base. Enfield has as many sweet 16s at FGCU than Cronin ever has had. And Cronin can’t hold leads with under a second to play

Thanks for reminding me of Providence.

I hope Cronin starts off 0-5 against the rival school like Enfield did. (But I’d prefer Cronin not go 3-0 after that. Lol.)
