  • Early substitutions problem

For several years I have noticed that Enfield usually does a mass substitution a few minutes into the game. Frequently it results in a loss of continuity established by the starters. This was exactly what happened in the last two games, but it's also happened a lot in recent years. It's gotten to the point where on Saturday my wife said "you don't need to say it, I know what's going to happen".

I understand subbing for early foul trouble, making mistakes, or other reasons for an individual player. But bringing in 3 subs all at once in the first 5 minutes is what I don't understand and it frequently hurts us.

I would appreciate others to discuss the pros and cons of this approach.

you are playing the long game, establishing a deep rotation to maximize freshness later in the game, before the other team has you figured out (when it would hurt worse to keep rotating). you also maximize different combinations and looks to throw at the opponent to find weaknesses sooner.

Enfield doesn't usually follow the same pattern in the second half so I don't know if taking players out four minutes into the game keeps them fresh.

I have brought this topic up on another thread. I somewhat agree with the OP. I don't see why Enfield makes mass substitutions after four minutes? If we're off to a real good start maybe you can sub a player or two, the max, but sending three or four players in from the bench makes little sense. We have been off to great starts the last handfull of games only to see it all go away when we have mass substitutions. Most players are just getting warmed up four minutes into the game. Also, we have a very difficult time scoring when both Eaddy and Evan are on the bench.

      This doesn’t actually happen.

Usually, unless there is a major issue like foul trouble or a player(s) really playing bad, we bring in 2 guys at the under 15 time out. Usually it’s Goodwin and one other. This is totally normal.
