  • PG Recruiting

Sorry if there's a thread on this - but curious to get any insider thoughts.

Given the dearth of non-committed prospects available and the tragic Zaon Collins situation, where are we looking for PGs in the 2021 class? I have to think Tahj Eaddy is going to try to make some money next season, and I we absolutely cannot go into next season with just EA at the PG spot.

Is Cameron Shelton a legitimate grad transfer target? Anyone else in Jason/Andy's crosshairs?

I’ll chime in. With the transfer portal/grad transfer & transfers seemingly gain immediate eligibility, it will be interesting to see what plays out.

Players like Devin Askew (Mater Dei HS/enrolled a year early) from Kentucky who is originally from California could be a player that decides to transfer.

Dior Johnson currently is a 2022 prospect but there has been so much talk with him potentially reclassifying. What’s interesting with him is that he was playing at Oak Hill in Virginia but moved back & enrolled at Corona Centennial. He also backed off his commitment with Cuse, but also keep in mind he is from New York. I know there is genuine interest between Dior & USC but I honestly see him taking the G-League route.

I’ve thrown Cameron Shelton’s name around and he is a strong possibility of grad transferring out of NAU. Before his senior season at Damien HS, he played 3 years at Chino Hills with the Ball brothers + Onyeka Okongwu.

The staff has plenty of options to go about filling in the PG position should Tahj decide to move on. He’ll be 24 by this time next year & we should expect for him to play professionally either overseas or in the G-League.

Should Tahj decide to come back, who knows what Ethan will decide to do either way. From the outside looking in, he seems to be the odd man out but maybe he’ll stick to his guns & hopefully graduate in time to eventually grad transfer, should he decide to move on from USC.

It really is difficult to gauge recruiting now. Even moreso with the abundance of transfers. The 2022 class however is considered deep in CA. If USC can continue on their current trajectory many talented kids will be lined up to want ti play for this program going forward.

Thanks for the tidbits. Always enjoy them. Even if we strike out (hopefully not), Kobe Johnson has been playing PG and he would be a serviceable option as well? Or we could play double CG with RDW and Malik Thomas?

Eaddy is filling in the Jonah Mathews role on offense very well and seems more confident with his ball handling, even if he isn't as good a defender as Jonah. Peterson uses his length well on defense and is averaging more assists than Eaddy, they complement each other well. I think USC can be effective with Drew as the 3rd PG option, maybe even 2nd if the 1st is a stud. EA due to health or whatever just hasn't developed into that consistent leader at the point yet. Even though he's just a sophomore and has time to improve, I still think he naturally prefers to create his own shot than for others which is a problem since the talent around him is often better.

There were stretches against Stanford where the bigs were set up for super easy buckets and we need more of that. Enfield needs to find someone who wants to play the J-Mac role in this offense, hopefully EA steps up. I'm not convinced any of the next crop of combo guards Enfield signed will produce better than Drew.

Thanks all. These guys have gotten very creative in building competitive rosters over the past few years, so I'm sure they've got a few things up their sleeves.

Love this squad but admit I do miss the J-Mac/Julian Jacobs days. It was great to have two guys who were essentially a one-man press break. J-Mac was truly special.

If you need a reason to smile, here are some of J-Mac's best assists in a Trojan uniform.

According to Tahj's bio on the interwebs, he was born in 1996 and will be 25 in July. Not sure if accurate.

the staff really likes Kobe from what I heard. They like his length, his basketball IQ & his overall understanding of how to play PG. Based on his film, he does a great job setting up his teammates & making the extra pass. Both Reese & Malik are capable of handling the ball but they are also both shoot first type of guards.
