While I've made joke in the past about the "curse of USC basketball", remember that there really is no such thing. Any individual or entity, when given enough time, will experience a random set of occurrences, some positive and some negative. If we put 1,000 monkeys on typewriters and give them millions of years, they will eventually create all the text on this message board.
So there are no curses, no hexes, no jinxes, no karma. None of these magical notions are going to determine USC's fate tonight or at any time in the future.
This USC basketball team is going to rise or fall not based on something that happened 20 years ago, or even 5 years ago, but on the ability of the players on this current team to deal with the challenges brought before it.
As fans, we can look at the component parts of opposing teams, look at what transpires, and come to a conclusion about what it means. Because humans like to take short cuts, we tend to say things like "we were unlucky" or "we always lose on the road in February" or "that's just USC basketball for ya" when we lose. It helps us cope.
But USC is 15-3 and in first place right now simply because it is playing like a team that is 15-3 and in first place. If we cease to play like that, we might lose, or we still might win some games. But it has NOTHING to do with anything other than what is happening on the basketball court with THESE players RIGHT NOW.
That all said, let's go get a big win tonight vs. the Huskies and stay in first. It's a good place to be, isn't it?
And, if we lose, let's not make a big deal out of it, or fall back on the old nostrums. At least that's how I'm going to approach things. No matter what happens tonight, this is still a quality team with a chance to do good things.
