  • When will we play the complete game? I know it's coming...

We won because of our bigs. The Mobleys and Chevez were excellent and really dominated inside. We got some offensive contributions from Tahj, but he shot a subpar percentage (3-10), as did Drew (2-6), and Ethan (0-3). Andy should have played White more, he was having a very solid game (4-6), converting 2 steals for points, totaling 9 pts to go with 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. Max was really a non-factor with 2 pts (breakaway dunk) and 3 rebounds in 16 minutes with 2 bad turnovers. I think he should have sat more in the second half. Noah didn't get a shot off in 5 minutes.

So, we all know it is there, the complete game, where the inside game is working AND we are getting consistent outside shooting. This needs to happen down the stretch to make us a dangerous team in both the Pac-12 and NCAA tourneys. We are consistent on defense and always play with effort, so the sky is the limit if the shooting comes around.

    Fight on! Beat the Cougs!

I don't recall the last time I saw a team win a game with one 3PM; let alone by 15 on the road.

I'm with you, if we had solid, consistent guard play we'd be a Final Four contender. On a given night, all we need is one of Drew, Ethan or Tahj to have it going offensively to be very formidable.

The good news is, I still feel good about our chances in tournament play. We're gonna guard you to death and kick your ass on the glass. Shooting > 30% from 3 and > 70% from the line really should be enough to get us over the hump in most games, with what we know we're going to get from our bigs (~30 points, ~15 boards on efficient shooting).

What worries me about the tourney is a more mature and physical team that will push us around - P12 doesn't really have that, but a team like W Virginia is full of energized and strong I Whites.

Idk If anyone from the B1G scares me unless they get hot... Ohio St. Or Mich maybe. Nova obviously solid, us vs Bama would be a fun game...

One big problem with the tourney for Pac-12 teams is how our refs call games is completely different to how games are called in the tourney. This might be the first SC team that doesn't get a lot of fouls and that's in the Pac-12 where breathing on someone is a foul. Hopefully that carries over to March Madness.

biggitysc - idk, it seems like it varies from game to game. There have been plenty of B1G and other conference games with near 50 fouls and people on the reddit threads are complaining like crazy... I agree the way games are reffed could be a huge disruptor though

Good post Trojan 2021. The Pac-12 has one such team and it is Colorado and we've seen what happened there. USC has got to knock down more shots to advance deep in the tournament and our history based on this season isn't very optimistic. We don't shoot the three particularly well and we are a very poor free throw shooting team. Our strengths are defense and rebounding.

We've been fortunate that we haven't needed those "complete games" to get where we are at. I hope that we get them when we really need them like during most of our remaining games- we have a target on our backs now.

It's a sign this is a good team. We find different ways to beat you. Against the bRuins, it was Ethan and Tahj because they double and triple teamed Mobley clogging the middle. Hopefully all of it will be clicking at some point in the same game, but what's good is we don't even need that to win games.

The win on the road against UofA waa great. I'm.not sure if that was a complete game. But White and Goodwin played great and rest of team did as well. We shot 58% on field and 57% on 3s. And we played solid defense as we normally do. And even good Max showed up and played well too (have to bring that up haha). We have not won there in long while so that victory was very satisfying.

But we need that good and consistent shooting to come back for us to.have a deep run at madness tourney. But I also feel good.knowing we are not 3-point shooting reliant team because we can win ugly with our defense and sub-par shooting. We also have enough guys who are gritty. And playing with no fans in tourney will ptobably work to our advantage.

I’m not sure why people think “complete games” are essential to success.

These games where outside shooting, inside shooting, defense, free throws and lack of turnovers happen at a high level without interruption for an entire game are incredibly rare, even with the best teams.

Even still, our decimation of a good BYU team was pretty close to a complete game by this criteria.

But the point is that while it may be aesthetically pleasing to have all elements firing, there’s really no “best” way to win by 15 points on the road. This is like when people used to complain about Mike Leach’s offense throwing for 550 yards and only getting 50 yards rushing. Who cares? THEY PUT UP 600 YARDS OF OFFENSE. A yard gained on the ground is no different to a yard gained in the air.

I’m far less worried about last night than most it would seem. They knew they had a win, they have a much better team in WSU immediately following on Saturday. If they want to conserve energy for the stretch I’m ok with that.

I’m not sure we can play a better game than this one. We even shot 74% from the FT line.

5 game winning streak with winning by an average of 12 points per game and people still complaining that USC isn't playing good enough SMH

As long as we keep playing good defense, we’ll be in every game. Biggest change from years past IMO: whenever previous teams got cold, they got lazy on defense and were quickly ran out of the gym. This year we keep the pressure on for 40 minutes and the shooting eventually comes around during our inevitable cold spells.

I know that I am one of the new guys here but I don't see what's wrong with wanting to see a little more consistency on offense. I love this team and really want them to go as far as they can go this year and I think that playing closer to their high potential would help immensely.

I think it's cool to want more consistency. But as far as playing to potential, I'm not sure how much more we can expect with basically an entirely new starting lineup and new roster, some made up of guys who are castoffs from mid-and-small major schools. I think being 16-3 and in first place in the conference on February 12 is pretty damn close to playing to potential with this roster. I really have few complaints.

That said, I'm sure we will start shooting better at some point. But this is an inside-oriented team and everything flows from Evan outward.
