  • Max's Potential

Check out the 2:09 mark of these highlights. What jumped out to me was the length combined with the speed that Max shows on this breakaway. I think Coach Enfield is patiently working with Max and I expect that by his senior year he might be one of the most dangerous players on the team. Some of his decisions are not great today and he is prone to turnovers but these can be overcome with experience.

    Go Max! Fight On!

The Trojans take down the Huskies on the road and improve to 16-3 on the season.SUBSCRIBE to USCAthletics: http://bit.ly/SjpuRl

Max wants to do well. I saw a video of him last summer (don’t remember if it was posted here or somewhere else) where he was in the gym with a trainer working on lots of midrange shooting and handles. At this phase on offense he still “tries” too hard. But I love his heart and intentions. I truly hope for all parties that he stays here all four years - he has the potential to be a tremendous glue guy his junior and senior years with continued continuity in the program. If he were to transfer, I’d fear he may never live up to his potential.

IMO...... He needs to narrow his offense to a couple of spots on the floor and develop those first. Eg. 12 to 15 ft jumper on the right side of the floor. Develop confidence in his SPOT .... then expand. It's like developing a QB.... don't give him the whole plar book..I think he hurries his offense. As Wooden preached.... be quick but don't hurry.

He has length and athleticism, is good on defense and as you've said speed. So the talent is there.

His length and athleticism help us on defense. However when he has the ball on offense I just wait for something bad to happen.

Max is such a great young man...but the next time he beats his opponent "to the spot" on defense will be his first. Keeping it real. Fight On!

I agree with everyone's post. I appreciate his defense and hustle. On offense, my brother phearSC reminded me that Max finds a new way to embarass himself on offense each game. This happens when he tries to do to much like playing ISO and one and one game which often lead to bad shots or turn over. Rooting for Max. I hope the game slows down for him on offense. Fight On Max!

OK. So I am not the only one who see's this. Dropped passes for layups...charges....dribbling mistakes....passing turnovers. My son and I watch him play through our fingers. his minutes are maddening for a team with such potential and so many kids who need a few MORE minutes....Like Baumann, Eaddy. White, Goodwin and Peterson. Love Max, but now is not the time to keep developing him. I hope the coaching staff changes that up sooner than later...before it's too late.

I think we post about Max more than anyone other than Evan because we all see his untapped potential. As long as he makes some progress each game/ each off-season he is still on pace to be a great player his 3rd and 4th years here.

Did he make progress each game / each off-season? Heck no.

He does some really special things but I think he presses when he shoots because he is worried that any miss will affect future playing time. He just needs to let it go.

when he gets confident, there’s no one better on the team in the open court. He can get from half court to the middle of the key in like two gliding steps.

"special?" Like a "special" person? What special things does Max do on defense MeltonNotHelton? M2M guarding? Help defense? Blocks? Steals? Boxing out?
Leading the defense with confidence? Navigating hedges? Please clarify a couple of them, so I can watch more closely to identify his hidden strengths. Thank you.

Definitely easy to root for Max. He seems to be all in and has unlimited potential. He gets a little ADD on the court and just needs to relax and not force issues (as we know, most times easier said than done). One play in the Washington game that stood out was Ethan Anderson’s expression after he passed to Max, who was driving in the key and he fumbled the ball out of bounds. Anderson’s expression was priceless. Needless to say, it didn’t appear that Anderson looked Max’s way the remainder of the game. No question Max has all the attributes and energy to be successful, let’s hope he starts putting it all together. Fight On Max !!!!

Wow. What am I missing? Seriously. Max is a tremendous kid with gigantic potential at his size, but he's been horrific on the court. I mean, come on guys. Are you watching close? His defense has been atrocious. His help defense is bad. He's late to box out. He get's beat in almost every one on one opportunity. He drops his head. He has no offense to speak of, and while he's finding his way, we're giving up possessions. I love Max, but every minute he's on the court is a minute that Bauman, Goodwin, Eaddy, Peterson, Anderson or White could actually be contributing. Max is lost out there....and this team has a chance to be special. I fear his minutes will actually cost us the season when it's all said and done. Let Max develop int he off season.

based on this response & the post you created citing your frustration with him, it doesn’t seem like you love him.

lol Root for...I've heard him in two interviews, and he's such a phenomenal young man. I can, however, be honest about what I see on the court. His play, I do not love. His heart, generosity, and kindness, I do love. He's a Trojan. I hope he turns into something special, but he's not even close to being an above average basketball player yet. At this point, he's almost always very clearly the worst player on the court every time I see him play...and I've watched every single game. Still, yes. Love. Great young man.

Max plays well enough esp in defense. He brings a different game dynamics with his length, althletiicscm and hustle. For this reason, CAE is giving him minutes. He has earned those playing time. CAE won't hesitate to take him out and give minutes to others if he is playing horrific on both ends. I do like the other players you mentioned Bauman, Goodwin, Eaddy, Peterson, Anderson or White.

But I respect your take. I do get frustrated with Max a lot of times. In CAE, I trust. Fight On!

I don't question his heart. He just looks lost our there though. Max had as many turnovers as points against a bad Husky team...and he played 17 minutes. vs UCLA, Max played 18 minutes, and went 0-3 with 3 REB, 2 A and 1 TO. Two of his 3 shots were not pretty. How is he playing more minutes that White or Goodwin, who have both had great games at some point this year. Max hasn't had a great game in his tenure, and the next game where he's one of our best 3 players will be his first.

vs STAN, Max played 21 minutes, shot 2-6, missed his only FT, had 5 REB ad 1 TO. He's got heart. Game? Not so much.

His defense on Delaire helped turn that game around. Peterson was getting killed. He also did a good job on Juzang. He is usually in there when we are making runs of late. This team's best attribute is defense.

Agree to disagree on the Stanford game. ...and Juzang killed him - Ran right by him, just like everybody else he guards. Next time he beats his player to the spot, message me please. Just note the time stamp, so I can go take another look. Help D is not good either. We have escaped games with his minutes. His length is sometimes helpful on D, but his feet and head are liabilities on that end of the court. ...and he is a complete liability on offense.

TroyD - Max played half as many minutes as Johnny did. if you watched the game, Johnny literally dribbled right past him whenever he wanted to. You're commenting like Max shut him down and stopped him...blocked his shots....did anything disruptive to Johnny. lol Max had 0 STL, and 0 BLK. JJuzang had a terrible shooting game, and missed a ton of open shots. We also spent large chunks of the UCLA game in zone, so Max would have had very little to do with Juzang. I've watched that game twice, and if he made a disruptive play once, I missed it twice. ...possible, but not likely.

Here's what I suggest. Watch Max tonight, and if CAE continues to see fit for Max to play 18+ minutes, send me the time stamp for when Max beats his man to the spot just once. It's supposed to happen every time when guarding the wing - make your opponent transition to his weak hand. I just want to see it once. Please. Watch how he handles hedging. I want Max to succeed. I just don't want his minutes to crush the hopes and dreams of this amazingly constructed '20-21 Trojans basketball team with Final Four potential.

I love the Max-ter with all his exuberance. And I want him to play each game in order to gain confidence and to become a key contributor. It will happen. GO MAX !

He is such a great kid! Just listen to him speak about his efforts, or his teammates. He is the consummate student-athlete. He'll tell you that he only cares about winning, and is first to lead with superlatives about his teammates, including newcomers - threats to his playing time. Gotta love the kid, I sure hope the game slows down for him and the light goes on sooner than later.
