  • Pac12 tournament

Is it better to have it or not?
Forget the money angle in your answer.

I would like to have it.

1.) Assuming SC won out in the regular season, they could get 26 wins by winning tournament
2.) Possibly getting the #2 seed if SC won it
3.) Double our PAC12 conference trophy count
4.) Seeing more of Evan Mobley in his only season wouldn't hurt

Yes. Because we can win it this year and that would be really cool and worth the risk

Honest to God I would love to have it, but I think it's greedy and the more mature answer Is "no".

Fundamentally, I don't know what the NCAA's plan when one or two teams inevitably test positive for COVID prior to playing in the big dance...

This is the best shot we have at a high seed in the tourney in years, and we already missed out seeing big O the tourney yesterday... If we didn't get to watch this team in the tourney either, I would be more than disappointed.

From a practical standpoint - people are tired of covid, the players are young and healthy and I don't think anyone really cares if they get COVID so keep testing and let the players play all the games...

Unfortunately, from a PR standpoint, that position isn't tenable.

“ and I don't think anyone really cares if they get COVID”
Anyone who doesn’t care is tragically ill-informed. The world is still learning all of the effects of this virus and the disease it causes. Google “COVID testicular damage” and you’ll learn about how male fertility can be compromised. And that’s not even including potential long term heart and lung damage.

The PR standpoint point is spot on. And there’s the liability issue, but the kids should just be able to sign a waiver. Damn shame the Pac 12 is soft and wouldn’t allow fans this year. Have seen several games in the south and it’s awesome to watch

SC90s How many college kids have gotten long term testicular damage from COVID and what studies do you use to show the risk level and correlation? I want to know the science behind this.

Sounds like you want to argue and not research this. If you want to know the science behind this, then do what I suggested that you can do and google it.

My point was we don’t fully know what the virus/disease does to the infected and we won’t be able to gauge the long-term effects until some point in the future. You can smoke all you want and binge drink all you want and think because you don’t fall over dead tomorrow, you don’t need to care about any long term damage, but now after studying it for decades we know for sure that’s foolish thinking.

I don't see any compelling reason to hold a conference tournament. There will be no fans, which means it will lose $, and what's the sense of playing a 20 game regular season, to give the automatic bid to someone who wins a 4 day tournament. And throw in the risk of a positive Covid test, and now your chances of competing in the big dance is jeopardized.
Use that last week to play out some make up games, and let the chips fall where they will.
As for the Covid 19 fear mongering, enough already. We have been lied to consistently by the medical community and politicians, and we have scared people to the point of thinking that walking outside without a mask is life threatening Remember the guarantee that if a football season was played, players would die.? The Myocarditis(sp) threat?. Games being super spreaders?
People want to get their lives back to normal, and I am sure the players could view competing interest and risks, and would choose to play.
We are becoming a nation of cowards, doing that we do what the government says we can, all in the name of being "safe"

I was ready to like this post until you started on the political nonsense. As someone who lost an Aunt to Covid, it's not as cut and dry as you're saying.

Apart from that, I'm on the fence about the Pac-12 tourney. I'd rather we win out and not play it, but the more college basketball I can get I'll take it.

Troy D- you are right. I hadn't considered that but I can't think of them playing this without somebody making money

I’m not sure conference tournaments ever really make sense. They’re fun to watch and they generate lots of money, but their impact on the big dance is pretty random. It’s really just an extra weekend where teams can help or hurt their chances/seeding. I hope there is a Pac 12 tourney but it’s probably not the right thing to do this year.

Many good points being made here. I can see pros and cons to having the tournament:

pros- What TroyWonder said above plus the benefit of more games to improve and get into "playoff" mode.

cons- We will, hopefully, already be a decent seed without a PAC 12 tournament. Is the possibility of improving that seed worth the risk of playing additional games where someone could get injured or get Covid? Personally, I think that these young players would recover fine if they contracted Covid but it won't make any difference to the NCAA- we would be banned from the Big Dance, right?

Guess I'm on the fence on this one.

Thanks for all your responses. Many of your replies are concerning this year PAC 12 tournament.

My original post on this topic is not just for this year but more generic. That is why have or not have it at all.

Nevada will be allowing 20% capacity, so don’t bet on no fans if they have the tournament

In my mine, the true conference champion EARNS the title through winning the most conference games by the end of the regular season. I have never thought of the Tourney Champion as the Conference Champion, despite the NCAA automatically inviting the tourney Champion.

I admit this is a very unusual season; we may have teams that will not be able to complete a full slate of conference games, or have lost a number of games because key team players were held out for covid precautions. I don't see any way to totally rectify the situation. It is what it is.

It’s a must for modern college basketball. The extra cash and ability for conferences to add more teams to the bracket is an essential part of college basketball.
