  • The realistic goal for this team for the bracket...

should be a 3 seed. Right now we're a consensus 4/5. Get off that line would be great for a number of reasons.

    1. There are a lot of dangerous teams on the 12/13 line: Toledo, UConn, Western Kentucky, Belmont, Colgate.Would I rather play a team like Abilene Christian or UNC Greensboro in round 1? Uh yeah.

    2. The teams on the 6 line are good but wildly inconsistent. Everything after round 1 is difficult, but again, I'd rather play Purdue or Virginia Tech than Kansas or Florida State.

    3. If we are good enough to get to the Sweet 16, I'll take Alabama or Villanova rather than any of the 1 seeds.

What will it take to get a three seed? I think a 3-1 finish in the regular season along with a conference tourney final appearance will get it done. 3-1 with a conference tournament win is a lock.

This team is good enough to make a deep run. What do you all think will get us to the 3 line, which would facilitate a deep run?

Completely agree. And frankly, I'd rather be a 6 than a 3 given that the second round game is pretty much a toss up anyways and I think the 1 seeds are a clear cut above the 2s this year.

Given the general scorn cast upon the Pac 12, I think we'd have to go 3-1 and win the P12 tournament or finish the season 4-0 to feel really good about landing on the 3 line. And honestly, I think both of those scenarios are very possible.

I do think a 3-1 regular season finish and a conference tourney berth (with a loss) would earn the 3 seed. Completely realistic at 24-6.

If we go 4-0 or 3-1 and then win the tourney, we would get to the 2 seed at 26-4 or 25-5.

TV agree completely with your post. Getting the 3-seed is huge. First off we would get a little easier 1st round game. Second we would avoid Gonzaga, Baylor, Michigan, or Ohio State till the Elite 8 if we happen to get that far. From what I've seen those 4 teams really stand out. Third, I agree on Alabama or Villanova. To a slightly lesser extent I would have no problem facing Iowa or Illinois. Should the likes of Houston, West Virginia, Fla St, Texas , Oklahoma, or Virginia get a 2 seed I would feel pretty confident we can beat any of those teams. Virginia is the most overrated seed. Their best non conference win is against Kent State in overtime. They lost to San Francisco. Their Quad 1 wins are @Clemson, @ Georgia Tech, @ Notre Dame. Yes, somehow a bad ND team is a Quad 1. Our resume stands out when you compare it to Virginia. And fourth, agree on the potential 6 seeds. None scare me.

As for what it should take you're on point. 3-1 should get us there. I think just not getting upset in the 1st game will be enough to retain a 3 seed. Agree with MNH a 2 seed is possible with his scenario.
One thing to consider is a lot of teams that we are vying for a higher seed will be playing each other. So while one team will move up the other will drop.

Oklahoma got upset tonight so that helps us move closer. Illinois lost although I think they could afford a loss or two based on their resume. Teams that could make a push for a 4 or 5 seed all lost tonight. LSU, Missouri, & Virginia Tech all lost.

Beating Colorado could go a long way to a 3 seed

swamdog and TVofTroy - You're both spot on. We're still underrated. I really don't want to have to face Bouknight and UConn again early in the tourney. You just know the selection committee would discuss that. (Bouknight's a monster.) A 3 seed would be AMAZING! ...and I would not want to play us in the tourney. Our defense makes everybody uncomfortable, and our offense is starting to come around. Gotta start with a big road win @ Colorado.

Virginia just lost again, at home to NC State. Bad loss for them. Good for us.

The beauty of the 2 line if we can get there is there’s a good chance we avoid the Baylor and Gonzaga regions. They can’t put two Big 10 teams as the top 2 seeds in the same region. Thus, if Michigan and Ohio State are both 1 seeds, and Illinois and Iowa are 2 seeds, we’d be guaranteed to be in the Michigan or Ohio State region as a 2 seed.

Actually, I think this year they may have no qualms about putting two B1G teams in the same region.

They made the announcement that they will strictly use a "snaking strategy" to seed the teams, a privilege they haven't hade in previous years. This means that the worst 2 seed MUST play the best 1 seed.

They could adjust a teams seeding to fit a narrative but I don't think they will...

So I believe it is a snake but the conference rules still apply. This is why Villanova gets Michigan even though Villanova is the last 2 and Michigan is the third 1 in Lunardi’s bracket. And Illinois gets Baylor and Iowa gets Gonzaga. Illinois would get Michigan and Iowa would get Baylor if it were a true snake since the two seeds are Bama, Illinois, Iowa and Nova in that order

Hmm, interesting, I wonder if they will just move seeds around to fit a "balanced bracket" in terms of conferences.

              I guess we'll see...

You learn something new everyday. Potentially, Illinois could no longer be a 2nd seed because of their loss to a pretty bad MSU team. Will be interesting to see how this plays out

I just realized that all of our remaining games - including Vegas, most likely, depending on how the 8/9 seeds shake out - are either Q1 or Q2 opportunities:

                  @ Colorado: Q1
                  @ Utah: Q2
                  vs. Stanford: Q2
                  @ UCLA: Q1

Anything other than Oregon St. in the second round at Vegas would also be a Q2 game, with the semi-finals and finals also offering two likely Q1 opportunities.

Who knows. A 4-2 or 5-1 finish, with 3 or 4 of those as Q1 wins, could very well bump us to the 3 line. Might need another team on the 3 line to flame out early in their league tournaments but it's nice to have a meaty part of our schedule coming up when we're playing really solid ball!

I just want our team to keep winning and get the highest seed possible. Let the chips fall where they may on match ups.

Wow, this is really great. Two years we are talking about NIT invite, and now we are debating what seed is best 2-6 - What happens to SC basketball. Love it.

With all the bad luck this program has endured since it’s existence, they are definitely due for some good luck. Hopefully this is the year!!!
