  • The Curse

I am a frustrated season ticket holder for over 50 years. I've seen it all many times. I should know better, but two weeks ago, I told a friend "I am getting sucked in again."

There were some signs that I chose to ignore. We had padded our record against the bottom tier and benefitted from several opponents missing key players. We lost to Colorado at home, hadn't played Oregon and hadn't been on the mountain trip. I loved the road sweeps but they were not as difficult as normal without fans in attendance.

After getting national attention, losing ugly the last 3 out of 4, just feeds the old image of "it's just SC basketball." Regardless of the next two games, nothing short of a sweet 16 season will offset that image. It may not seem fair to our few hundred posters, but it's real.

We bemoan the lack of fan support and discuss how to get it. This board can help spread the word, but we need all the fans we can get. I get very discouraged when i see serious fans get attacked constantly if they don't follow the moderator's sense of propriety. I hope this board helps broaden interest rather than be limited to small numbers who stroke each others biases.

As long time poster MJD would say "only time will tell."

Quoting my friend Michael? Despite your limited amount of posts you must be on these boards a long time. Is that a correct statement?

Marty, Yes, I am a long time reader and occasional poster. I think it was Bibby Baby when I started. We haven't met but I know you as the guy who will give me great insight into point guard play.

I think it's healthy to share different opinions and think they are part of growing the fan base.

I keep hoping this program will get over the hump and I have been disappointed so many times. Given our history, consistent NCAA appearances is an accomplishment and maybe the best we can expect. Yet, I sincerely believe that the only way we will get support is to win consistently at the national level.

Yes, I am the poster who has always stressed the importance of the point guard position. I was on the Bibby Baby board for a long time also.
I realize the last few games have been very disappointing and reminiscent of many other USC teams that have failed. I am somewhat disappointed also but I look at it a bit differently. I have been a fan(not an alumni)since I was a young teenager and I to this day have no explanation as to why except I was an OJ and USC football fan. For many, many years I watched Selection Sunday knowing that my favorite team once again, would not be invited to The Big Dance. I, of course, really wanted to win the conference title this year but I am more excited and interested that on Selection Sunday my Trojans are going to be in the tournament. I know that this team is not talented enough to win the NCAA Championship and just being selected and have the opportunity to watch my team in the tourney is very gratifying and if they win a game or two,all the better. I look at this season as pretty much a complete success as coming into the season after losing Jonah,Okungwu, Utomi, and even Rak, that this years team may not be so good. We all had no idea about the transfers or how The Mobleys would perform and then throw in the obstacles of Covid furthered my doubts about this team.
We still have HUGE games left to play. Let's try to be upbeat and be somewhat happy of the position that we are in. Fight On!

Perhaps not touting a nonexistent “curse” would be a start to not stroking biases.

But this is a typical USC basketball fan post: Dismal, entitled, glass half empty, full of confirmation bias, sky is falling rhetoric, when we are within reach of our first conference crown since 85. The level of dishonesty used to rationalize away a successful season is crap. Road wins didn’t mean anything now because no fans were there? We’re playing by the same rules as everyone else dude.

Add to that a shifting of the goal post that requires a Sweet 16 run to now call this a successful season. This team was picked to finish 6th in the league!!

This is not fan support. It’s not even sensible and reasoned criticism. It’s whining. You should wait until the season is over to lay into this team for its failures. That would be fair. After all, we won’t know how the year will end up.

You are a typical USC basketball fan. Suddenly show up when things get good and jump ship as soon as you don’t get exactly what you want. People like you are why our fan base sucks.

If this post discourages you from posting here, so be it. USC basketball doesn’t need fair weather fans.

If you think this posts like this are doing a good job as a moderator then you are mistaken. You can't control fan sentiment. If you want an *only* optimistic board then make this a private board and tightly regulate who can join.

Nope. Can’t control sentiment. But I can and will rebut bad takes.

I’ll reiterate: If your only contribution to this board is to post non-constructive negative takes that focus mainly on how USC basketball disappoints you and affects your emotional well-being (as this OP did), I’m going to call it out as being a bad fan. If that someone can’t take being rebutted, then that person shouldn’t post.

This is a USC basketball fan site. To the best of my ability, the days of unfairly piling on the program are over. Read the post pinned at the top. Constructive criticisms are welcome and encouraged. Posts that whine about the program being cursed and then proceed to downplay USC’s legitimate success this season will be called out for being bogus. No one is being banned for it. Just rebutted.

Sink or swim. You either have a good take or your don’t. But don’t whine when someone disagrees.

So losing at home is bad, but winning on the road doesn’t matter because of no fans? I get it if your point is we don’t have quite the same homecourt advantage as some other teams, but c’mon you can’t have it both ways. It’s like you’re just trying to find things to be negative about.
