  • Oh, those Free Throws!

I was struck by this quote in the LA Times from Ryan Kartje, "Among likely NCAA tournament teams, no one has been worse than USC, which has hit just under 65% of its free throws, good for 322nd nationally." We all know FT shooting has been an Achilles heel for this team, that apparently even the Shot Doctor can't fix, but #322 in the country? Wow, that is bad and could come back to bite us going forward. We know this team has the ability to knock down their FTs, let's hope they focus and make it happen! We could go on quite a run if we can shoot FTs better.

Totally agree. Our missed FTs yesterday should have sunk us. Thank goodness the Bruins missed the most important ones late. At this late in the season, they just have to rise to the moment, step to line, and make them.
    GO BEAVS!

Yes, I really thought that yesterday was going to be the day that our poor free-throws would cost us the game. Pretty hard to believe that we're 21-6 and #322 nationally in free-throw percentage.

the FT shooting is the basketball team's equivalent of the football team getting penalties year after year.

Agree with everyone. No positives about our FT shooting this season and this game. But it is ironic we made a critical FT, when Goodwin made one of two to cut lead to 61-63 .And Bruins missed their freebie when Jaquez and Bernard (75% FT shooter) missed both the front end on their one & one. Fight On Goodwin!

A few D-1 basketball schools, e.g. Ivy League, opt out to play this season because of Covid-19 pandemic. The total number of teams in NCAA D-1 basketball program shrinks to 347.

SC's free throw percentage ranks 322nd out of 347. How pathetic!

Don’t want to take any luster off this fun season, but one thing I would love to ask Enfield after it’s all over is “how are you going to approach FTs differently next year?” Because we all know the definition of insanity...

But on other bright other side, we probably rank 25 out of 347 school. Guess we'll find out on Monday when ranking comes out. Silver lining this season - 21-6, 15-5. Some big and historic wins this season, potential top 25 to end regular season and still a chance to win Pac 12.

I agree with you. That FT % ranking hurts ..But it is still freaking awesome season and journey so far! Fight On CST_SC1.

Isiah Mobley and Chaz Goodwin are the problem. The rest of the team is ok
but Isiah and Goodwin drag the numbers down. Isiah seems to be improving though

As is most sports, it’s the elimination of mistakes and taking advantage of what you can control that wins championships. Making free throws and eliminating turnovers will be crucial as the team will now face consistent elite competition moving forward. It’s an enigma why his teams continuously struggle at the FT line and he being a past NCAA record holder in free throws at one time

Good point. I would add Noah Baumann (45.5%) who has been worse than Chevez (50%) and Isaiah Mobley (49.5%) this season and the consecutive misses after the technical foul, when you are our designated shooter was even more bewildering. For the entire list of our player's FT% click here. We have only 4 players at or above 70%: Tahj (77.6), Max (71.4), Drew (70.6) and Evan (69.9). Consider that Colorado as a team averages 83.4% from the line, that will definitely help them in the tourneys ahead. For the rest of the Pac12, only Cal (69.3) is below 70% as a team. So our 64.4% FTs (updated number) really jumps out, in a bad way. Let's just hope we can be better when it matters.

Hi, FightOn6665. Indeed like you said, USC ranked decently and satisfactorily high in many (say 80%, 90% or 95%) stat categories, e.g. we are top 7 schools in the nation on defense shooting percentage allowed. I am deeply appreciative of and immensely proud of our team performance this season.

My comment "SC's free throw percentage ranks 322nd out of 347. How pathetic!" is specific to the topic of this thread. By no means the "pathetic" description can be applied to the team in general and/or any other categories in specific.

We all know the team's much much sub-par free throw shooting is a prominent weakness, partially, maybe, because we don't have many other weaknesses to notice about.

Let's root for SC to have better free throw shootings in the PAC-12 and NCAA tourneys. Imagine, if we can make 3, 4, or 5 more free throws per game, how big our winning chance can improve?

                      Fight on.

Hi CST, I know your "pathetic" comment is specific to the topic of this thread. My bad my sunshine pumping comments came across different. I've enjoyed reading your comments in the forum. You are fair and mostly spot on. Let us make some noise in Pac tourney and win it. Fight On!

Just hitting the front end of a 1 and 1 would do wonders. Those first shots missed cost us 2 points, not just 1. Also would be nice if we also hit the "and 1" FT (I'm looking at you Evan).

Ironically, we won the game on FT difference:
                      2-pt FG USC 21 (42) to UCLA 21 (42) Even
                      3-pt FG USC 4 (16) to UCLA 5 (15) -3
                      FT USC 10 to UCLA 6 +4

While our free throw shooting is poor as a team, USC, the tallest team in the country, usually gets much more chances to go to the free throw line than our opponents. From time to time, our points from free throws are larger than those for our opponents, as is the case in the UCLA game, even if they have a higher FT shooting percentage. . We just have not taken as much opportunities as we should have. We simply luck out.

If USC doesn't shoot better from the foul line in the tourneys coming up, they won't be playing too much longer. High school teams shoot a higher percentage then we do.
