  • 3 takeaways from this win

    Three main takeaways:

    1. this usc team looks tired and rusty. Three games in five days with little time to practice beforehand produces what we saw.

    2. we badly miss Anderson. This kind of pressure defense is going to keep happening until we get him back. We survived but it wasn’t pretty. Not easy without a true point.

    3. There’s never any reason to gripe about an 18 point conference win, though I’m sure some of you will find a way.

It's tough to get into a really good and consistent offensive flow without a true point guard. He is the quarterback of your team and it will show when you don't have a good one. Peterson and Eaddy have really performed admirably but neither are point guards or great ball handlers. Peterson, though, for his size handles the ball very well but you don't want him handling the pressure from pesky point guards. How about when Baumann was bringing the ball up against the pesky termite, Jones? That was pretty scary.
Good win in an unusual season.
BTW, the most unheralded player thus far is Goodwin who consistently gives us some pretty good minutes.

3 practices in 3 weeks. Actually went something like this:

No practices for 2 1/2 weeks, practice, game, practice, game, practice, game.

Today's game: SC started out of the gate on fire, led by 16. Krystkowiak calls timeout, kicks his foot in the ass of his starters. They come out with stifling defense with a lot of favorable no-calls by refs. We make a bunch of turnovers in the last 10 minutes of first half & finish the first frame with 10 turnovers. A couple of posters here say Peterson is having a terrible game.

2nd half, SC adjusts (coaching?) and they commit only 5 turnovers. While smothering our best player to the point where he got zero shots off, and without our starting point guard, and only 3 practices in three weeks with 6 of the 9 players who got PT having worn the cardinal and gold for less than two months, we come back and win by 16. And that Peterson guy who was so terrible for 10 minutes in the first have, finished with a double-double, and zero turnovers in the last 20 minutes.

**A major issue with our team (besides free throws) is our two tallest players are soft. If White & Goodwin gave their mean streak to Evan & Isaiah, we'd be much better.

Question for Melton, from someone with limited BB knowledge- Once he gets more acclimated to the team, will Waters be able to provide some relief for Anderson at the PG spot?

He doesn't seem to be PG-type; more of a scorer/assassin. I think/hope he'll be another scoring weapon as the season progresses.

Not a point guard. But looks to have decent handles.
